Marmaris is a coastal town in Muğla Province in the southwestern part of Turkey. It has about 31,450 inhabitants ( 2008) and is dominated by tourism. German sister city is Fürth / ( Middle Franconia )

History

The exact founding date of Marmaris is not known. Getting sources from the 6th century BC and named the city with its ancient name Physkos. The first settlement dates back to the Carians. The Carians came to the writings of the historian Herodotus of Crete. They settled here in the area of ​​today's Muğla Province on and used the natural harbor as a naval base for their raids to the Phoenicians in Rhodes and the other islands in the Aegean Sea. In the year 138 BC, Attalus III entered. , King of Pergamon ( Bergama ), Physkos from at Rome. The city was under henceforth the Roman generals in Rhodes. In 1425 she was recognized by the Ottoman Empire. For a planned Rhodes campaign, the castle was built in 1522.

According to a local legend, the name means the city Four hanged architects. It stems from the legislative history of the formative castle. Environment

Marmaris is located on the Aegean on the Bozburun Peninsula. In the north of the city lies the Gulf of Gokova, to the south of the Mediterranean. West of the town is the Datça Peninsula. To the east of the district Koycegiz lies with the eponymous lake. Nearby points of wider area tourist centers such as Bodrum or Fethiye. Tourism
