Milas ( in ancient Mylasa ) is a town in Muğla Province ( southwestern Turkey) on the main road from Izmir to Bodrum, 20 km from Bodrum Airport.

History

The ancient Mylasa was one of the most important cities in the country of Caria. It belonged to the 5th century BC in briefly Delian League and was in the 4th century seat of the Carian ruler of the dynasty of Hekatomniden before Mausolus his seat around 360 BC after Halicarnassus, today's Bodrum, moved. In the Hellenistic period Mylasa belonged successively to different kingdoms. During the invasion of the Parthians in 40 BC, it was heavily damaged and had during the Roman Empire no longer importance, even if it was the seat of a Christian bishop in late antiquity. Milas was the capital of the Beylik Menteşe.

Attractions

The town has a famous weekly market, which not only offers tourists a picturesque sight, but also a prime source and cheaper olive oils (the environment is a single olive area ). Worth seeing are next to the old Turkish houses, craft shops and caravanserais two mosques of the 14th century, one with gable minaret ( Orhan Bey Camii, 1330), a very well preserved Roman tomb from the 1st century BC, similar in style the wonders of Halicarnassus (Bodrum ), and an archaeological museum with pieces from pre-classical, classical, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods.

Worth seeing in the area are Labraunda ( Labranda ), an ancient place of worship of Zeus Labraundos in the mountains, Euromos located near the road to Selimiye in an olive grove - one of the best preserved temples in Getting around (half of the once 32 Corinthian columns still stands ), and on the eastern edge of the town on a volcanic cone Peçinkale, castle vorosmanischen a clan which once ruled West Anatolia.
