List of cities in Chile
The list of cities in Chile provides an overview of the development of the population of the larger cities of the South American country of Chile. Listed is also a list of cities in north-south direction. A table of the largest municipalities by population and an alphabetical list of all 346 municipalities in the country can be found at the communities in Chile list.
Agglomerations by population
By far the largest agglomeration in Chile is Santiago with a population of 5.4 million. Thus, about 40 percent of the country's population concentrated in the capital region. The biggest agglomerations in Chile ( 2002 census ):
Urban settlements by population
According to the definition of the Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas ( INE) a place from a population of 5,000 statistically a city or an urban settlement. Consequently, there were 239 cities in the census in 2002 in Chile.
The following table lists the urban settlements with more than 40,000 inhabitants, and the results of censuses ( VZ ) of 21 April 1982 April 22, 1992 and 24 April 2002. Listed is also the region to which the city belongs. The population figures refer to the respective urban settlement - the geographical area the city - not the city or municipality in the political sense. To the municipality of Santiago has only 200,000 inhabitants, the urban settlement area ( área urbana ) 4.7 million.
