List of International Labour Organization Conventions

Conventions and Recommendations

Since 1919, the International Labour Organization has established and maintained a system of international labor standards. This work standards are drawn up by the representatives of the members of the ILO (governments, employers and workers) and define fundamental principles and rights in the workplace. These include agreements that are legally binding international agreement that can be ratified by the Member States, and recommendations that serve as guidelines. In many cases, define the basic principles of the Convention, which are supplemented by the recommendations, although there are separate recommendations.

Conventions and Recommendations to be adopted at the annual International Labour Conference of the ILO. If a Convention was adopted, the ILO member States are encouraged under the Constitution, usually to present this to the " competent authorities" to Parliament for debate for ratification. If an agreement has been ratified, in effect it usually occurs one year after the ratification date. With the ratification of the country commits to implement the Convention in its national legislation and case law and to report periodically to the ILO on this implementation. (see examples of the implementation of the Convention in the legislation of Germany )

These national reports on the implementation of the Convention will be examined by a commission of experts. A report will be published to the International Labour Conference. During the International Labour Conference selected cases are discussed.

In addition, various complaint procedures can be launched against countries that violate an agreement that they have ratified.
