Today's Bulgarian capital Sofia looks back on a centuries-old and varied history. According to archaeological finds, which prove an about 8000 year old Stone Age settlement here, Sofia is one of the oldest cities in Europe.

In the 7th century BC in the area moved to the Thracian tribe of the Serden. From them also the ancient name of the city headed - from Serdica.
