List of National Historic Landmarks in Indiana

The list of National Historic Landmarks in Indiana is a monument list of the current 37 by the U.S. Department of Interior as a National Historic Landmark (NHL) recognized sites and monuments of national importance in the state of Indiana. They are managed by the National Park Service.

The 37 sites are located in 22 of the 92 counties in Indiana. They represent the history of this state from the era of the Indians to the early settlers and motorsport. They are reminiscent of battles, the history of the circus and the formation as well as some other topics. A National Historic Landmark is of military historical significance, fourteen are important examples of different architectural styles, nine of these landmarks are related to important historical people, and a place is an archaeological site. An object, a ship that was originally located in Indiana, but was later transferred to another state.

Management

The National Historic Landmark Program is the National Park Service, a division of the Department of the Interior, manages. The National Park Service determines which sites and buildings meet the requirements of a National Historic Landmark and proposes the corresponding objects after consultation with their owners for the nomination process before. The Secretary of the Interior shall review these nominations and decides on the basis of established criteria, whether an object is declared a landmark or is suitable. Both public and private property can be explained on the NHL. The designation as a NHL is associated with tax breaks, grants and other means. The owner of an object may veto the nomination. If this is the case, the Secretary of the Interior established only the suitability of sites as NHL.

Distinction to the National Register of Historic Places

All NHLs are automatically included in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP ), a list of historical buildings, the declaratory recognizes the National Park Service as a memorial. The main difference between an NHL and a general NRHP - entry is the nationwide importance, who NHLs, while most other entries only from local or federal state interest. The NHLs in Indiana presented in December 2009, approximately 2% of all entries in the National Register of Historic Places in Indiana.

Location and extent

Marion County, where the state capital, Indianapolis is located, has eight NHL, six more are in Bartholomew County and four in Jefferson County. In other nineteen counties there is one NHL. The remaining 70 counties of the state have no NHL. The first NHL in Indiana was established on 9 October 1960 and the last date on 20 March 2006 Three architects have designed a number of objects that are classified as NHL. Francis Costigan, William Dentzel and Eero Saarinen.

Eight National Historic Landmarks are classified in Indiana as a National Historic Landmark District, which means that they cover a rather large area and not just a single building. The Lanier Mansion and the Charles L. Shrewsbury House are self- NHLs, are, however, within the Madison Historic Landmark District.
