List of political parties in Lebanon

Many political parties in Lebanon already exist since the French Mandate. Lebanon is therefore ( apart from Iraq since 2003) the only Arab country in which there is a genuine multi-party system.

In fact, Lebanon is the only democracy in the Arab world and adjacent Turkey and Israel the only one in the Middle East. The country's political system is based on a republic, in which the many different religions of the country to contribute to the equal power (principle of concordance democracy). The deputies seats in the National Assembly are elected freely and simultaneously distributed according to a key in proportion to the shares of the religions of the total population - different political parties can thus compete against each other. This is regulated in the Taif Agreement since 1989, previously (from 1975 ) wrestled the various political and religious groups in the Lebanese civil war military for power. Nevertheless, Lebanon looked to the Civil War because of democracy and peace as Switzerland of the Middle East.
