Live in Japan is the fifteenth album; or the second live album by George Harrison after the separation of the Beatles. It was on 13 July 1992: published (USA July 14, 1992 ). In the U.S., the album reached number 126 and in the UK and in Germany it could not place itself.

Genesis

After the release of his last studio album Cloud Nine in October 1987 was George Harrison member of the Traveling Wilburys, consisting of the other members of Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne. With the Traveling Wilburys, he released two albums, Traveling Wilburys Vol 1, in October 1988, and Traveling Wilburys Vol 3, which was released in October 1990. In March 1988, George Harrison took with his son Dhani Harrison and Ravi Shankar on the song Ride Rajbun, which was released in October 1992 on the compilation album The Bunbury Tails.

Due to financial problems of George Harrison, he agreed to the proposal from Eric Clapton to complete a tour of Japan. The tour consisted of twelve concerts in seven cities between 1 and December 17, 1991, was also Harrison's second and last solo tour. During the concerts 19 songs by George Harrison and in the middle part four tracks from Eric Clapton were played. Only during the first concert in Yokohama on December 1, Harrison played the title Fish on the Sand and Love Comes to Everyone. On December 2, he played in Osaka again the first title.

Between 4 and 24 November 1991, the concert preparations were carried out in the UK in the Bray Studios in Berkshire. The songs Piggies and Taxman George Harrison changed the text. While he added a line of text to the first title, he updated the names of the politicians in Taxman. As producers of the live album Spike and Nelson Wilbury were specify both pseudonyms used George Harrison in the Traveling Wilburys.

On 6 April 1992 Harrison graduated at the Royal Albert Hall in London his first and last solo live appearance in Europe, at a concert for the benefit of the Natural Law Party, a small political party in Britain. In this performance, he was accompanied mainly by the band, which had supported him during the tour of Japan, was being replaced by Eric Clapton Mike Campbell and Nathan East by Will Lee. Ringo Starr played the drums at the last two songs. During the concert the same songs as in the Japan tour only If I Needed Someone and Devil's played radio.

In the same year, on 16 October 1992, George Harrison had his last live appearance before a concert audience during the " Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Celebration" at Madison Square Garden in New York. During the concert, interpreted by several artists from Bob Dylan composed songs. George Harrison sang the title If Not for You, Absolutely Sweet Marie and partly My Back Pages. The latter two songs were on 19 July 1993 on the CD Bob Dylan album - released the 30th Anniversary Celebration.

No single releases were made from the album.

Reissues

The first publication in a double CD format took place in July 1992 parallel to the record release ( double album ) without bonus tracks. In the U.S., the album was released exclusively as a CD. In March 2004, the album was released in a newly remastered version on CD in the EMI Group with a new mix in SACD format.

More information

Warner Brothers released a promotional CD (Live in Japan Sampler ) with the titles Taxman, Dark Horse, Cheer Down, Something and While My Guitar Gently Weeps. On the DVD The Dark Horse Years 1976-1992 concert footage of four songs were released ( Cheer Down, Devil's Radio, Cloud 9 and Taxman ), which suggests that there are further footage of the Japan tour.
