Lockhart is the county seat and the county seat ( county seat ) of Caldwell County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located at the junction of U.S. Highway 183 to Highway 142 in the central southeast Texas, 48 miles south-east of Austin and has a total area of 29.2 km ², of which 0.1 km ² water surface.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 11,615 people in 3,627 households and 2,691 families. The population density was 398.6 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 65.42 % White, 12.68 % African American, 0.67 % Native American, 0.34 % Asian, 0.06 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 18.00% from other ethnic groups.
