Lokomotivny

Lokomotiwny (Russian Локомотивный ) is an urban-type settlement in the Chelyabinsk Oblast (Russia) with 8498 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is located in the eastern foothills of the southern Urals, almost 250 km as the crow south-southwest of Chelyabinsk Oblasthauptstadt and less than 3 km southwest of the center of Kartaly, the suburb it is practical.

Lokomotiwny is one of the enclosed settlements ( SATO ) of Russia and as such the Oblastverwaltung subordinated administratively directly.

History

Its history begins in 1963, when it was decided to deploy a unit of the Soviet Strategic Rocket Forces at Kartaly. The 59th Missile Division took up her duties on December 18, 1966. The military code name for the base was Kartaly -6, for the associated residential development, their self-governing bodies in 1974 took up the work, even Solnetschny.

From 1979 up to 46 intercontinental ballistic missiles of various modifications of the type R -36M were in Kartaly -6 as one of six sites (called by the Soviet forces RS -20, NATO SS -18 Satan) stationed the 1990s until the end of years remained the backbone of the Soviet and Russian nuclear forces.

Economy and infrastructure

After deduction of the missile forces of the Russian armed forces Lokomotiwny is primarily residential development with various trade and utilities.

The nearest railway stations are Kartaly Kartaly -1 and -2. On major railway junction Kartaly intersect the routes Chelyabinsk - Troitsk - Orsk and Ufa - Magnitogorsk - Kazakh border ( on towards Astana and Karaganda ).
