Lord George Hamilton

Lord George Francis Hamilton GCSI, PC ( born December 17, 1845September 22, 1927 ) was a British politician ( Conservative Party ).

Family

Hamilton was a posthumous son of James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn. The Salutation Lord was therefore a pure courtesy title, formal Hamilton was not a nobleman.

1871 Hamilton married Lady Maud Caroline Lascelles ( 1846-1938 ), a daughter of Henry Lascelles, 3rd Earl of Harewood and Lady Louisa Thynne. The marriage produced three sons were born: Ronald James Hamilton, (1872-1958), who went into the diplomatic service, Anthony George Hamilton (1874-1936) and Robert Cecil Hamilton ( 1882-1947 ). The latter suggested careers in the Army or in the Navy.

Political action

Hamilton studied at the University of Glasgow and, after completing his studies as a magistrate in Middlesex and Westminster.

1868 Hamilton was elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament for the constituency of Middlesex in the House of Commons, the House of Commons. The seat of Middlesex he had continuously held until 1885, then, from 1885 to 1906, he belonged to the Parliament as MP for the constituency of Ealing.

From 1874 to 1878 Hamilton served as State Secretary in the Ministry of India, then from 1878 to 1880 as Vice Chairman of the Committee on Educational Affairs ( Vice - President of the Committee on Education ). The highlight of his career eventually formed his duties as First Lord of the Admiralty in the first two governments Salisbury (1885-1886 and 1886-1892 ). In this capacity he led, among other things, in 1889 the two- power standard, which should have validity as a principle of British naval armaments until the First World War. 1894, while his party was in opposition, Hamilton took over the role of Chairman of the Committee for the schools of London. From 1895 to 1903 Hamilton eventually served as Minister of India in the 3rd Salisbury Government and the Government Balfour. In addition, Hamilton belonged since 1878 to the Privy Council, the British Privy Council.
