Lori Province

Lori (Armenian Լոռու մարզ ) is a province in northern Armenia. It is bordered to the north by Georgia, to the west by the province of Shirak, Kotayk and on the south by Aragazotn and on the east by Tavush. The capital is Vanadzor. The area is 3789 km ² and 253 351 people live here (as of 2002). The climate is relatively mild, because a mountain range protects against cold winds from the north.

The province is home to the monasteries Haghpat and Sanahin two World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. They were built in the 10th to 13th century and formed next to the Geghard Monastery with its libraries and schools the spiritual center of medieval Armenia.
