Lošinj

The island of Lošinj [ lɔʃiɲ ] ( German outdated: Lötzing, Latin: Apsorrus, Italian: Lussino ) is a Croatian island in the Adriatic.

It is located in northern Croatia in the Kvarner bay and is about 75 square kilometers. The highest elevation is approximately 588 m ü.Adria the Televrina. The island of Cres - Lošinj was called in ancient times Apsyrtides. These two islands are today ( with swing bridge ) separated by an artificial channel in the nearby village on Cres Cres. Lošinj is among 8,134 inhabitants. The island is a floral and pine- rich paradise and one of the sunniest places in Europe. The capital of the island is called Mali Lošinj ( Lošinj small ). Veli Lošinj ( Lošinj wholesale ), despite the name the smaller the village, is a spa town. Other cities are: Nerezine, Sv. Jakov and Ćunski.

About 2,000 years ago by the Romans was a channel between the islands of Cres and Lošinj built ( Osorski tijesnac, about 100 m long) in order to shorten the sea lanes for smaller ships ( previously Cres and Lošinj were regarded as just an island ). Likewise, Lošinj was divided in two by the Privlaka channel in recent times. This is located at the Marina Lošinj, just before the town of Mali Lošinj. The larger, northern part of the island is Veli Lošinj ( Lošinj wholesale ), called the smaller, southern part is called Mali Lošinj ( Lošinj small ). The same towns Mali Lošinj and Veli Lošinj ( the historical center of the island) are both located on the southern part, ie the island of Mali Lošinj. The island has an airport for small aircraft.
