Louis Cheikho

Louis Cheikho ( born February 5, 1859 in Mardin, † 1927 in Beirut ) (actual Rizq Allah Cheikho لويس شيخو ) was Orientalist, theologian and Jesuit.

Training

Cheikho followed his brother into the Jesuit school in Ghazir in Lebanon 1868. He learned there modern and ancient European and Oriental languages ​​. He joined then in 1874 in the Jesuit seminary Lons -le- Saunier in France. From 1878 to 1888 he taught in Beirut at the Université Saint -Joseph Arab literature, parallel, he studied philosophy at the same university. He then studied in the UK four years in Vienna and Paris theology for one year. From 1894 he was teaching in Beirut.

Work

He is regarded as an important scientist and pioneer, who has rediscovered the heritage of the Christian- Arab culture. He published unpublished Christian Oriental literature in Arabic, which he collected while traveling in Lebanon, in Iraq, Syria and Turkey. He also edited the magazine al - Machriq, which he founded in 1898.
