Louis-Nazaire Bégin

Louis- Nazaire Bégin Cardinal ( born January 10, 1840 in La Pointe- Lévis, Canada, † July 19, 1925 in Quebec City ) was Archbishop of Quebec.

Life

Louis- Nazaire Bégin studied in Quebec City, Rome and Innsbruck Catholic theology and philosophy. He received on 10 June 1865, the sacrament of Holy Orders and his PhD a year later in Innsbruck as a doctor of theology. From 1868 to 1877 he taught at the University of Laval in Quebec, from 1877 to 1884 he was prefect of the seminary of Quebec and from 1884 to 1888, he worked at a state school.

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him on October 1, 1888 Bishop of Chicoutimi. On 21 October the same year he donated the Archbishop of Quebec, Elzéar -Alexandre Taschereau cardinal, a bishop. Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Trois Rivières, Louis -François Richer dit Laflèche, and the Bishop of Rimouski, Jean Laforce -Langevin.

In 1891 he became coadjutor, 1894 and 1898 Apostolic Administrator Archbishop of Québec. Pope Pius X took him on 25 May 1914 as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Vitale, Gervasio e Protasio to the College of Cardinals. Louis- Nazaire Bégin died on July 19, 1925 in Quebec and was buried in the crypt of the local cathedral.
