Louis of Meissen

Ludwig von Meissen (* February 25, 1341 at the Wartburg, † February 17, 1382 in calbe (Saale ) ) was the fourth son of the Margrave Frederick II of Meissen and his wife Matilda, daughter of the Emperor Louis of Bavaria.

Life

Ludwig was - not least due to its origin - at the age of 17 years, Bishop of Halberstadt ( 1357-1366 ). After he was first bishop of Bamberg (1366-1374), then archbishop of Mainz (1373-1381), and finally Archbishop of Magdeburg ( 1381-1382 ). He was one of two opponents during the schism of Mainz from 1373 to 1381.

After the death of Archbishop John of Luxembourg - Ligny in 1373 a part of the Mainz cathedral chapter elected the 20 -year-old Bishop of Speyer, Adolf of Nassau, to the administrator of the archdiocese. Pope Gregory XI. appointed, however, at the request of Emperor Charles IV, instead Ludwig von Meissen archbishop. There were years of wars that have been fought especially in Thuringia and in the calibration field of Mainz. Yet his son Wenceslas, the three Margrave of Meissen ( Ludwig brothers ) and Landgrave Henry II of Hesse seized the emperor, Louis the page. Adolf of Nassau, in turn, was supported by Duke Otto of Brunswick- Göttingen, Count John of Nassau, Count Heinrich VI. of Waldeck and Count Gottfried VIII of goats grove. Neither of the two rivals was able to prevail decisively, so that cleavage of the Mainz Erzstuhls lasted.

Only after the death of Gregory XI. 1378, which was followed by the so-called great Western Schism, in 1381 it came to an agreement as to the archbishopric of Mainz. The antipope Clement VII confirmed Adolf of Nassau in 1379 as archbishop of Mainz, and ordered him in 1380 to the Administrator of Speyer. When King Wenceslas then recognized Adolf's appointment, Ludwig renounced in 1381 to Mainz after him Pope Urban VI. had appointed archbishop of Magdeburg compensation. He went to Magdeburg, but died in February 1382. He was buried in the Cathedral of Magdeburg.
