Ludwig Hoffmann (architect)

Ludwig Hoffmann ( born July 30, 1852 in Darmstadt, † November 11, 1932 in Berlin, full name Ludwig Ernst Emil Hoffmann ) was a German architect and city planner in Berlin.

Life

Hoffmann received his education together with his childhood friend Alfred Messel at the Art Academy of Kassel and the Berlin Academy of Architecture where both were active motif in the Academic Team. As Regierungsbauführer he worked since 1879 under Franz Schwechten in Berlin. His career began in the 1880s by winning the competition for the Supreme Court Building in Leipzig together with Peter Dybwad. In 1896 he was city architect in Berlin and coined 28 years, with numerous public buildings, the architecture of the capital. Under his supervision, 111 systems have been installed with a total of well over 300 individual buildings.

He soon won some influence on the entire German construction activities, such as a jury member in many architectural competitions.

In 1906 he was awarded the title "Secret Baurat " and received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Darmstadt. In the same year he was appointed as a full member of the Prussian Academy of Arts. In 1917, he received another honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Vienna.

Work

The work of Ludwig Hoffmann was - as the overall architecture of historicism - long criticized for a flat rate. Only later did the specific value of its buildings for the urban development of the imperial era was recognized. As early as 1956 declared Ludwig Mies van der Rohe: " Yes, yes, of Hoffmann, which have done us all wrong! " Today its buildings are regarded as outstanding examples of the efforts of the German cities to cope with the strong growth processes before the First World War, both artistic and social demands fulfilled.

Honors

When he retired in 1924, the city of Berlin awarded him its honorary citizen. His name today wear built by him " Ludwig Hoffmann Elementary School" in the Lasdehner street in Friedrichshain, " Ludwig Hoffmann Hospital " in Pankow and the " Ludwig Hoffmann bridge ". In Leipzig - Sellerhausen a street is named after him.

Designs

1884, the joint design competition with Emanuel Heimann was purchased for the building of the Berlin Museum Island.
