Ludwig Michael Schwanthaler

Ludwig Michael von Schwanthalerstraße ( born August 26, 1802 in Munich, † November 14, 1848 ) was a Bavarian sculptor and is the main champion of classical sculpture in southern Germany.

Life

He came from the family of sculptors Schwanthalerstraße from Ried in present-day Upper Austria, his father was Franz Jakob Schwanthalerstraße, his mother Klara Lutz. In 1819 he finished high school at ( today ) Wilhelmsgymnasium Munich. Schwanthalerstraße lecturer was just there at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and teacher at the Royal Baugewerksschule. His career and his work has been funded by King Ludwig I, as Schwanthalerstraße spent several years on a study trip in Rome (1826-1827, 1832-1834), for which Louis I donated the funds.

On September 4, 1842 he was appointed as part of the unveiling ceremony of the created by him, and cast by Johann Baptist Stiglmaier Mozart monument in Salzburg 7th honorary citizen of the city. In 1843 he built the castle Schwaneck in the Isar valley. His main work is considered the colossal statue of Bavaria in Munich.

The 1837 the studio towards building erected for models, which was made ​​available as Schwanthalerstraße Museum to the public after his death, was destroyed in World War II. It is art history as one of the first artists to museums.

His bust was erected in the hall of fame in Munich.

The sculptor William Hornberger (1819-1882) was one of the favorite student of Ludwig Schwanthalerstraße.

Last Resting Place

His grave is in the Old South Cemetery in Munich Glockenbachviertel. Here he is buried with his parents.
