Luigi Lavitrano

Luigi Cardinal Lavitrano ( born March 7, 1874 in Forio, Naples, Italy Province; † August 2, 1950 in villini ) was Archbishop of Palermo and later a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Luigi Lavitrano lost in 1883, his entire family in the earthquake on the island of Ischia. He came to church custody and studied at various universities of Rome trays Catholic theology and philosophy. The sacrament of Holy Orders he received on 21 March 1898. Subsequently, he worked as a teacher and headmaster in theological education of candidates for the priesthood in Rome.

In May 1914 he was appointed by Pope Pius X. Bishop of Cava e Sarno. The bishop ordained by Cardinal Luigi Lavitrano Basilio Pompilj. Pope Pius XI. commissioned Luigi Lavitrano 1924 to head the Archdiocese of Benevento, in 1928 he appointed him Archbishop of Palermo, 1929, he took it as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Silvestro in Capite to the College of Cardinals. Luigi Cardinal Lavitrano participated in the conclave of 1939, in which Pius XII. was chosen.

He laid down the line of the Archdiocese of Palermo in 1944 and was Prefect of the Congregation for Religious in 1945.

Luigi Lavitrano died on August 2, 1950 in villini and was buried in the Santa Maria di Loreto Basilica in Foro d' Ischia.
