Luigi Palmieri

Luigi Palmieri ( born April 22, 1807 in Faicchio, Kingdom of Naples, † September 9, 1896 in Naples) was an Italian meteorologist, seismologist and volcanologist.

He studied physics, mathematics and philosophy at the University of Naples in 1847 and became professor of logic and metaphysics. From 1855 to 1896 he was director of the Vesuvius Observatory in Naples.

He was known in particular through improved measuring devices, such as an electromagnetic seismograph and devices for measuring electrical voltages in the atmosphere.

Palmieri, it was completed in 1882, first demonstrated by the spectral analysis of Vesuvius lava the element helium on Earth.

The lunar crater Palmieri is named after him.
