Lutkun

Lutkun (Russian and Lezgian Луткун; Lezgian also Луткунар, Lutkunar ) is a village in the Russian republic of Dagestan Achtynski rayon. It is the second largest village in Rajon after its administrative center Achty and one of the oldest and largest cities of the Samur Valley. Lutkun located in the northeastern part of the Greater Caucasus at an altitude of about 1200 m to the left of the Samur, 4 km north- west of Achty and just over 25 km from the border with Azerbaijan.

History

The early history of the village is largely unknown. A first village fortress was founded in the 2nd century AD on a hill and has been preserved as a historical, now uninhabited part of the village. There was a mosque in the 10th century and opened a madrasa in the 12th century. The old part of the village was surrounded by a high wall with two gates. As the founding year of the present village is considered 1839.

Population

The population of Lutkun had fallen at the 2010 census again below 3000 after the number had been first time in 2002 exceeded scarce. Lutkun is the seat of the rural community ( selskoje posselenije ) selsowet Lutkunski with a total of 3702 inhabitants ( 2010). The municipality belongs next to Lutkun the lesser village Nowy Ussur ( " New Ussur "), which forms an enclave on the territory of Magaramkentski rayon 60 km in a straight line to the northeast ( Lage41.69583333333348.354166666667 ). This unusual constellation is the result of an earthquake in 1966, in which the about five kilometers north of Lutkun located in the mountains village Ussur was completely destroyed ( Lage41.52513447.689784 ). The residents were then settled together with those of other destroyed villages in the new village closer to the edge of the mountains.

The residents of the village are mainly Lezgins Sunni faith.

Sports

In 2011, the resident of Lutkun FK Samur won the Football Cup Süddagestans.
