Akhtynsky District
The Achtynski rayon (Russian Ахтынский район; lesg Ахцегьрин район / Achzehrin rayon. ) Is a raion in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia. The administrative center is the Aul ( officially Selo ) Achty.
Geography
The Achtynski rayon is located in southern Dagestan and is surrounded within the Republic of Dagestan by the Rajons Rutul, Kurach, Magaramkent and Dokuzpara. In the south of Rajon bordering the Republic of Azerbaijan ( Rayon Şəki ). The largest rivers in the area are Samur and Achtytschai. The area is 1120 km ².
History
The Rajon in its present form was created in 1929.
Population
The population was 2002 according to the official census, 31 592. The last Soviet census of 1989 had identified a population of 30 027. Most of the inhabitants are Sunni Muslims, who mostly belong to the ethnic group with the exception of Lezgins rutulischen village Chnow.
