Lycium fremontii

Lycium fremontii is a species of the genus Bock mandrels ( Lycium ) in the nightshade family (Solanaceae ).

Description

Lycium fremontii is a 1 to 3 m tall, strong, kinky branched shrub. Its leaves are glandular- hairy, 8-35 mm long and 2-15 mm wide.

The flowers occur in two forms and are fünfzählig. The calyx is tubular and hairless hairy and pubescent. The calyx tube reaches a length of 4 to 8 mm, the sepals are usually less than 1 mm long, rarely they reach a length of 2 mm. The crown is circular to broadly ovate, dark lavender or purple to white and fitted with purple veins. The length of the corolla tube is 8 to 15 mm, the length of the Kronlappen corresponds to 1 /4 to 2 /5 of the length of the corolla. The stamens are hairy at the base of the freestanding range glabrous to densely tomentose.

The fruit is a red, oblong - ovoid berry with a length of 5 to 9 mm. It contains 40 to 60 seeds.

Occurrence

The species is widespread in North America and is present there in the Mexican states of Baja California, Baja California Sur and Sonora, as well as in the U.S. states of Arizona and California.

Within the species, two varieties are distinguished:

  • Lycium fremontii var fremontii
  • Lycium fremontii var congestum

Outer systematics

Within the goat spines ( Lycium ) the species is according to phylogenetic studies in a clade grouped with other North and South American species of the genus. The species is closely related americanum with Lycium, Lycium infaustum, Lycium exsertum, Lycium parishii, Lycium texanum, Lycium torreyi, Lycium berlandieri, Lycium andersonii, Lycium elongatum, Lycium athium and Lycium minimum.
