The Motorway M-1 is a six-lane motorway in Pakistan, which connects the cities of Peshawar and Islamabad in the north of the country and it runs almost parallel to the national highway N-5 between these two cities. It is administered by the National Highway Authority.

Construction

The construction of the M-1 began in 1997 after the opening of the M-2 between Islamabad and Lahore. A new link between the cities of Peshawar and Islamabad had become necessary because the traffic had increased rapidly and the N-5 was no longer sufficient. The first section was opened in 2004 by President Musharraf; the last section was released on 30 October 2007 for traffic. M- 1 was constructed from the start with three lanes in both directions.

Course

The M-1 runs from Peshawar over a distance of 175 km in the east and south direction and discharges into a motorway junction with the M -2; from there is connection to Islamabad.

The following cities are located just off the M -1:

Facilities

It is planned to build ten stations on the M - 1, of which five each in both directions. The three of them are located on the bridges over the rivers Kabul, Indus and Bara on both sides. At both ends of the highway two gas stations are already in operation.

Toll

The highway is a toll road in a closed toll system with cards. There is a toll booth on the highway near Peshawar. More toll stations are integrated into the connection points. The toll for the M -1 is continued on the M- 2 to Islamabad, there are no toll station at the end of the M-1 in Islamabad.

The toll for the entire route is 85 PKR (April 2010 ).
