Madi Ceesay

Madi M. K. Ceesay ( * 1957 in Perai ) is a journalist in The Gambia and a leading activist of the freedom of the press. He was president of the Gambia Press Union ( GPU).

Life

After attending primary school in Kerewan Samba Sira and Brikama Ba and secondary school in Latri Kunda he went to the Yundum College. 1976 Ceesay was set for a year as a teacher. He then worked at a credit, in the hotel industry and in a hospital before he came to journalism.

From 1996 Ceesay worked for the weekly magazine Gambia News & Report, previously he worked freelance for the magazine (from 1993 /94). He first worked as a reporter and later as deputy editor. In April 2001, was elected as vice president of the GPU. In June 2001, the Association of Health Journalists was established, while Ceesay acts as president. In March 2005, Ceesay was elected president of the GPU.

2006 ended Ceesay his work at the News & Report, and took over as general manager the lead in the daily newspaper The Independent. The Independent was closed by the government and detained with Musa Ceesay Saidykhan in March 2006 for a time by the National Intelligence Agency ( NIA). In October of the same year he was awarded by the Committee to Protect Journalists with the International Press Freedom Award.

In 2006, Ceesay the media agenda whose director he was. For a further term in the GPU was no longer available and Ceesay 2008 Ndey Tapha Sosseh was elected as the new President. From 2009 Ceesay was editor and publisher of the Daily News, which he founded and has appeared for the first time on April 6, 2009.
