Malestroit
Malestroit ( Malastred Breton ) is a commune with 2492 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Morbihan in the Brittany region.
Geography
Malestroit is located on the right bank of the River Oust, which forms part of the Canal de Nantes à Brest here. Since the channel is not used by commercial shipping, it is now frequented only by sports and houseboats.
History
- It dates the founding of Malestroit in 987, when the monks settled on the banks of the Oust. The place becomes a stage stop on the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
- End of the Middle Ages Malestroit is charged to one of the nine baronies of Brittany.
- Beginning of the 19th century is commissioned by Napoleon I started the construction of the Canal de Nantes à Brest, initially for military reasons, later to also connect with the target, the inner Brittany on the marketing of commodities.
