Manawydan fab LlÅ·r

Manawydan fab Llyr [ va ː b mana'wɘdan ɬi ː r] ( " Manawydan the son Llŷrs " ) is the title of the third branch of the Mabinogi in Welsh mythology. The narrative is both Llyfr Gwyn Rhydderch ( "The White Book of Rhydderch " ) and in the Llyfr Coch Hergest ( " The Red Book of Hergest " ) included.

This story follows on directly from the events in Branwen ferch Llyr ( " Branwen, the daughter Llŷrs ").

Manawydan, the son and brother Llŷrs Brans married after returning from Ireland Rhiannon, widow of Pwyll Prince (see Pwyll Pendefig Dyfed, " Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed " ) and mother of his comrades Pryderi.

When one day from Dyfed by magic all people and pets away just Manawydan, Rhiannon, Pryderi and his wife Cigfa remain, they must also leave the country after some time. In England, the men, as a saddler, sign makers and Schuster try to get through, but are attacked and expelled by the local craftsmen. Therefore they return to Dyfed where Rhiannon and Pryderi now also be caught by the mysterious forces of a boiler and disappear along with a whole castle. Manawydan tried to bring a harvest, but the sown wheat grains are eaten by mice from the Otherworld. Finally, it is possible Manawydan to unmask the author of Witchcraft, Llwyd ap Cil Coed, it is, a friend of Pwyll competitor Gwawl, the scorned and snubbed candidate, who stopped to Rhiannon's hand. The companions are freed and the spell is canceled by counter-spell.

After Birkhan the name of Manawydan Manaw, the Cymric names of the Isle of Man is derived, (see also Manannan ).
