Manche

The department Manche [ mɑ ː ʃ ] is a French department of atomic number 50 It is in the north of the country in the Basse -Normandie and is named after the English Channel, which in French is called La Manche.

History

The department Manche was created in the context of the French Revolution on March 4, 1790 as part of the historical province of Normandy. Its administrative seat was originally Coutances, but was moved in 1796 to Saint -Lô. Coutances took over temporarily the back seat of the prefecture, as the city of Saint- Lô was completely destroyed in the summer of 1944 during the Second World War when the Allied invasion.
