Manteigas is a small town ( Vila ) and a circle ( concelho ) in the Serra da Estrela in Portugal's Centro region.
History
The Portuguese word Manteiga means butter and is one of the few words from before the Roman domination in Portugal, from the language of the original inhabitants of present-day Portugal ( Lusitanian, Konii, Iberians ) have survived to the modern Portuguese. The area around Manteigas is famous for its dairy products, for example, for the Queijo da Serra da Estrela, which is considered the best cheese in Portugal, and for its thermal springs, de Caldas Manteigas.
Manteigas got the Charter ( Portuguese: Foral ) in 1188 by King Dom Sancho I, which was renewed in 1514 by King Dom Manuel I..
