Manuel Alonso Martínez

Manuel Alonso Martínez ( born January 1, 1827 in Burgos, † 13 January 1891 in Madrid) was a Spanish politician and minister.

Life

Alonso Martínez studied law. He then practiced as a lawyer. In 1854 he became a member of the Cortes, where he joined the Liberals.

Starting from 1855 to 1856 he was Minister of Public Works under Espartero and Leopoldo O'Donnell; 1863 to 1864 he held the same office under Miraflores. Following the September 1868 revolution, he took over under Sagasta and Serrano 1874 the Ministry of Justice. He had 1881-1883 and 1886-1888, again under Sagasta, held The same portfolio. The reform of criminal legislation in this period was his work. In 1889 he was elected president of the chamber.

Alonso Martínez was the author of numerous works on criminal law and criminal justice reform in Spain.
