Marange-Silvange

Marange Silvange ( German Maringen - Silvingen ) is a commune with 5815 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Metz- Campagne and is the capital ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Marange Silvange.

Geography

The community Marange Silvange than twelve kilometers north- west of Metz. Marange, the larger of the two settlements, puts on a hillside overlooking the valley of Bitteron, a small tributary of the Moselle along.

Through the south of the municipality Autoroute leads A4 (Paris- Strasbourg).

History

Marange was first mentioned as 971 Madrengias and belongs since 1659 to France. Silvange came to France in 1766, both communities were merged in 1809.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Marange Silvange developed from a small farming village into a dormitory town for the nearby steel mills and ironworks. Since the decline of the coal and steel industries throughout the region, many residents commute to the surrounding industrial plants between Metz and Thionville and in the near Luxembourg.
