Marcus Cocceius Nerva (Jurist)

Marcus Cocceius Nerva († 33 AD) was a Roman senator and lawyer of the 1st century AD, and grandfather of the Roman Emperor Nerva.

Nerva was Suffektkonsul around the year 22 AD From 24 until his death he worked as a curator aquarum for the water supply of the city of Rome. As the closest friend ( proximus amicorum ) of Tiberius, he accompanied the Emperor as the only senator when he retired in year 26 to Campania. In the year 33 he took against the will of Tiberius life because he allegedly did not want to look at the further deterioration of the state.

Nerva was an eminent jurist of the early classical Roman law. He was the predecessor of the lawyers Proculus as head of the so-called prokulianischen law school ( see Sabinianer and Prokulianer ). His son of the same is also emerged as a lawyer.
