Marcus Valerius Messalla (consul 226 BC)

Marcus Valerius Maximus Messala was a Roman politician in the last third of the 3rd century BC

He was the son of the consul of 263 BC, Manius Valerius Maximus Corvinus Messala. From his career, only the consulate in the year 226 BC is known that he held together with Lucius Apustius Fullo. During the Second Punic War he joined 210/ 09 before BC as fleet prefect ( praefectus classis ) to Utica and devastated the local coast. He reported to the consul Marcus Valerius Laevinus of an imminent threat of Sicily by the Carthaginians. As Laevinus the Senate the appointment Messallas dictator suggested that the Senate rejected this suggestion, after Quintus Fulvius Flaccus was appointed. More is not handed over Messallas life.

He took off the inherited from his father cognomen Maximus. His son Marcus Valerius Messala was consul 188 BC.
