Maretsch Castle

The Maretsch castle is located in the municipality of Bolzano along the Talfer and can be reached from the center of the Claudia de ' Medici road.

The oldest tower of the castle was built by Berthold from Bolzano to build about 1194. The massive keep is to provide, at least in this time. In the 13th and 14th centuries several phases of expansion were carried out under different owners. Among other things, the ring wall was supplemented with battlements and the swallowtail merlons.

The present appearance of the castle was under the Roman family, which extend the facility to the castle in the 16th century and was decorated with frescoes from the Renaissance. The construction of the four outer round towers dates from this period.

Maretsch served in the past as the seat of the State Archives of Bolzano and is now used as a conference center, but can also be visited on request.
