Maria Antonia of Austria

Maria Antonia (born 18 January 1669 in Vienna, † December 24, 1692 ibid ) was the only surviving daughter of Emperor Leopold I and his niece ( and cousin ) Margarita Teresa of Spain.

Life

At the behest of her father she married on July 15, 1685 Elector Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria. The marriage was unhappy. Maria Antonia suffered under the constant supervision and overhearing by the chatelaine. Her husband noticed little, and begat only after four years of marriage, my first son with her ( * May 22, 1689 ), which, however, already died three days after birth. A second son ( born November 28, 1690) was stillborn.

In 1691 Elector Maximilian II Emanuel was elected governor of the Southern Netherlands and settled in the spring of 1692 to get there, while Maria Antonia returned pregnant and alone with her father to Vienna. She also gave birth on October 27, 1692 a third son - Joseph Ferdinand Leopold - life. Exhausted and suffering from depression she lost all will to live.

Maria Antonia of Austria died on 24 December 1692 in Vienna and was buried in the imperial crypt next to her prematurely deceased mother. Her heart was buried separately and is located in the heart of the Habsburg crypt in the Loreto chapel, Vienna St. Augustine's Church.

Through her mother, she had a claim to the Spanish inheritance. In her will, she had renounced for themselves and their heirs the reversion of the Spanish crown and its privately owned overwritten her son. She had further provides that in the event of premature death of her son, her father, the Emperor Leopold I, and its relatives should inherit the legacy.

Joseph Ferdinand Leopold died on February 6, 1699 in the Netherlands. This event triggered the War of Spanish Succession.
