Maria Damanaki

Maria Damanaki (Greek Μαρία Δαμανάκη, born 1952 in Agios Nikolaos ( Crete) ) is a Greek politician (PASOK ) and EU Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

Biography

Damanaki completed a study of Chemieingenierurwesens at the National Technical University of Athens in 1975. During her studies, she was active in the resistance against the Greek military dictatorship works. When student uprising in 1973, she was the voice of the radio station " Edo Politechnio ". She was temporarily imprisoned and tortured.

Political career

After the fall of the dictatorship in 1977, she was selected as the youngest Member of the Greek Parliament, which it initially belonged to 1993 for the communist KKE, and later for the Synaspismos. Since 1991, she was Chair of the Synaspismos, but resigned from the party leadership after the party in 1993 at the 3 - had failed % threshold. Fisheries Policy
