Maria de Medeiros
Maria de Medeiros [ ˌ mɐɾiɐ dɯmɯdɐi̯ɾuʃ ] ( born August 19, 1965 in Lisbon; actually Maria de Medeiros Esteves Victorino de Almeida ) is a Portuguese actress, singer, director and screenwriter.

Biography
De Medeiros is the oldest of three daughters of the composer and pianist António Vitorino de Almeida and Maria Armanda Esteves his wife. Maria de Medeiros lives in France and is married to the sound engineer and cameraman Agustí camps. From this marriage the common children, Julia went bold (* 1997) and Leonor (* 2003). De Medeiros sisters Inês de Medeiros ( b. 1968 ) and Ana Medeiros also switched to acting.
Training and first acting roles
She completed her schooling at the French lycée Français Charles Le Pierre in Lisbon and studied philosophy in Paris and Acting later. She began performing in Portuguese cinema films in the early 1980s, 1984, she discovered the director Chantal Akerman also for the French- language film. 1990 celebrated De Medeiros with a supporting role in Ken McMullen's 1871 historical drama debut in the English-speaking cinema. In the same year she portrayed alongside Fred Ward and Uma Thurman, the famous French writer Anaïs Nin (1903-1977) in Philip Kaufman's Henry & June (1990). The role she had also received because of their visual similarity to Nin.
Four years later, she played Fabienne, the French boxer Butch Coolidge girlfriend (played by Bruce Willis ), the Oscar-winning Pulp Fiction ( 1994) by Quentin Tarantino. In the same year, she was represented by Teresa Villa Verdes Drama siblings at the 51st International Film Festival of Venice. There she was awarded for the part of Mary with the Coppa Volpi, Best Actor Award of the Film Festival.
Work as a film director
Towards the end of the 1980s was devoted to De Medeiros, parallel to her acting career, with the short films Sévérine C. ( 1987), and Fragmento II ( 1988) first work as a director. In 2000, she directed the film Capitães de Abril (English: cloves for freedom ) Director, which traces the events of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal on 24 and 25 April 1974. In 2007, she was appointed to the jury of the 60th Cannes Film Festival.
Work as a singer
Maria de Medeiros has come in recent years, alongside her activities in the film as a singer in appearance. Her repertoire is extremely broad -ranging. Musically, she maintains claim and moves mostly near to Jazz, Bossa Nova, the singer- songwriters, among others Their first album she recorded in 2007. With the musicians Jeff Cohen, Emek Evci and Joël Grare she interprets songs by Chico Buarque here, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Milton Nascimento.
The inspiration for her second album came to her at a concert she gave at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris (due to her appointment as UNESCO Artist for Peace 2008). She played it in 2010 with the musicians Edmundo Carneiro, Bruno Rousselet, Rubem Dantas, Pascal Salmon, Itacyr Bocato and Manuel Martínez del Fresno. The song selection spanned here eponymous countries and continents. So de Medeiros sang not only Portuguese, but also Spanish ( Castilian), Italian, Kimbundu, Catalan and Valencian. She interpreted here texts and songs by José Afonso, Joan Salvat - Papasseit, Víctor Jara, Nino Rota, Sérgio Godinho, Amélia Muge, El Último de la Fila, Lenine, Waldemar Bastos and others, but also the popular Angolan ballad Muxima, 1960 by the Duo Ouro Negro become internationally known. 2012 appears her new album, Pássaros Eternos ( " Eternal birds ").
She took in recent years also occasionally on other artists projects, in part, around 2005 the album Drama Box Mísia the singer, and in 2009 at the international toll projects for Joan Manuel Serrat and Nino Rota ( with among others Ute Lemper, Adriana Calcanhotto, Catherine Ringer and the Texas Sharleen Spiteri singer ), and the Feminia album of the Legendary Tigerman.
Reception
As an actress she has established with its many international engagement, and her directing work as well as her work as a vocalist were well received by critics and audiences. But her step into the forefront of public attention not succeeded due to her not getting the media zeitgeist corresponding occurrence and the amounts surviving continuous exposure to international blockbusters.
