Marie Elisabeth of Schleswig -Holstein - Gottorp ( born June 6 1634 Gottorp, † June 17, 1665 in Darmstadt ) was by marriage Countess of Hesse- Darmstadt

Life

Marie Elisabeth was a daughter of Duke Friedrich III. of Schleswig -Holstein - Gottorp (1597-1659) from his marriage to Maria Elisabeth (1610-1684), daughter of the Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony.

She married on 24 November 1650 Gottorp Castle later to become the Landgrave Louis VI. of Hesse- Darmstadt (1630-1678), with whom she had become engaged to his birth in 1649. On the occasion of the wedding of the last sword dance was performed in Hessen at a folk festival in Lollar.

Ludwig was included by his father in the year after their marriage in 1651 with the government in dealing with and joined its successor 1661. About Marie Elisabeth's sister Hedwig Eleonora, Queen of Sweden tied Ludwig extensive political relations with the Kingdom. Marie Elisabeth died four years later in " Kindsnöthen " after they had already been born eight children. Her death plunged Ludwig in deep mourning. The literary active sovereign wrote some poems in memory of his wife.
