Mario Minniti

Mario Minniti ( born December 8, 1577 Syracuse, † November 22, 1640 ) was an Italian painter of the Baroque in Sicily.

Life

After the death of his parents he came to Rome in 1593, where he later Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio met a short time, which for the workshop of Giuseppe Cesari, called Cavaliere d' Arpino, worked. It is certain that Minniti 1593 Caravaggio's model for a number of his early paintings with androgynous boy was acting like " The boy with the fruit basket" ( 1593, Galleria Borghese, Rome ), "The Musicians" (1594, New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art), " The Fortune Teller " (1594, Rome, ( Pinacoteca Capitolina ) and the "Bacchus" ( 1595, Florence, Galleria degli Uffici ).

Is Narrated that Minniti involved in the dissolute life of the circle of friends to Caravaggio. After numerous previous arrests Caravaggio injured on May 28, 1606 during a dispute Ranuccio Tomassoni so heavy that this later died a short time and Caravaggio had to flee from an impending condemnation from Rome. Also Minniti left immediately after this fact in Rome to Sicily. In Syracuse, he successfully built on its own career as an artist and sat down from here for a Caravaggio by sending a petition for pardon to Rome and him in 1608 on his recent escape for a long time offered quarters in his house. Stylistically, followed Minniti the painting Caravaggio by emulated his chiaroscuro ( chiaroscuro ), but without reaching the artistic quality of his role model. Nevertheless Minniti was together with Alonso Rodriguez the most important representative of Caravaggio in Sicily.
