Mark Robert Rypien ( born October 2, 1962 in Calgary, Alberta ) is a former American professional American football player at the position of quarterback. He played 17 years (with interruptions ) in the National Football League ( NFL) and won with the Washington Redskins to the Super Bowl.

College

Rypien was born in Canada, but is a U.S. citizen of Polish descent. He played college football at Washington State University for the Washington State Cougars.

NFL

1986 Rypien was selected in the sixth round to 146th place of the NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. Due to an injury he had to wait for his first appearance in the NFL two years. In 1988 he was able to capture a regular place and enforce against Doug Williams at the Redskins. He scored in this game round 18 touchdowns with 13 interceptions. By 1991 he was able to continuously improve its performance. The Redskins were able to win 14 of 16 games in the regular season with him as quarterback and prevailed also in the play- offs. In Super Bowl XXVI in Minneapolis, the Redskins were able to prevail with 37:24 against the Buffalo Bills. Rypien scored two touchdowns and was voted Super Bowl MVP.

The Super Bowl victory made off financially noticeable for Rypien. He signed with the Redskins a three-year contract and received a salary of nine million dollars. Due to many injured players the team from Washington was, DC 1992 unable to build on last year's success and failed in the play- offs at the San Francisco 49ers.

In 1993, he retired in the second season game a serious knee injury and came into the season not really kick in. Throughout his career, he should no longer fully recover from this injury. In 1994, he was dismissed in Washington and replaced by Heath Shuler. One by one he played at annual intervals for the Cleveland Browns, St. Louis Rams, Philadelphia Eagles and again for the Rams. About the role of a substitute player, he came out no more. In 1996, he finished his career first, circa 2001 to hire a surprise at the Indianapolis Colts. He came in four games unsuccessfully used. In 2002, he signed with the Seattle Seahawks but was dismissed before the season.

In the Great Lakes Indoor Football League in 2006, he is still playing a game for the Rochester Raiders. During his 105 games in the regular season, he scored through passes for his NFL team 115 touchdowns with 88 interceptions. Eight touchdowns he could Walk itself.

Honors

Rypien played in 1989 and 1991 in the Pro Bowl. After his Super Bowl victory, he was named Super Bowl MVP. Of the Redskins, he was elected to the 70 best players of all time in his club. In 2008, he was inducted into the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame.

After the career

Rypien is married and has two daughters. He is attending today charitable golf tournaments in the U.S. and has established a foundation for the fight against cancer in children, as his son has died of this disease at the age of three years. By 2007, he was co-owner of a NASCAR team.
