Mark Santer

Mark Santer ( born December 29, 1936) is a British Anglican theologian and university lecturer. He was from 1987 to 2002 Bishop of Birmingham in the Church of England.

Santer was the son of Reverend Canon Eric Arthur Robert Santer and his wife Phyllis Clare Barlow. He attended Marlborough College and studied at Queens ' College, University of Cambridge. In 1963 he was ordained a deacon; In 1964, the ordination. His priestly career began from 1963 to 1967 as an auxiliary vicar ( Assistant Curate ) Cuddesdon near Oxford. At the same time he was tutor at Ripon Theological College Cuddesdon. Subsequently, he was from 1967 to 1972 Dean and Fellow of Clare College, University of Cambridge. He was from 1968 to 1972 Lecturer ( Assistant lecturer ) in Theology at the University of Cambridge. From 1972 to 1981 he was Principal of Westcott House Theological College in Cambridge. In 1981 he was ordained a bishop. From 1981 to 1987 he served as the " Bishop of Kensington " suffragan bishop in the Diocese of London in the Church of England. In 1987 he was, as the successor of Hugh Montefiore, Bishop of Birmingham in the Church of England. In 2002, he went into retirement. His successor as Bishop of Birmingham, John Sentamu. After his retirement he worked since 2002 as a volunteer auxiliary bishop ( Honorary Assistant Bishop) in the diocese of Worcester.

Santer was a staunch opponent initiated by the Birmingham City Council celebrations, which were given the name " Winterval ". Santer was in his capacity as Bishop of Birmingham from September 1994 to end of May 2002 until his retirement as Bishop of Birmingham as a clergyman Lord of the House of Lords.
