Marx (Russian Маркс, also German Marx Stadt ) is a city in the Russian Saratov Oblast with 31 531 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). On the banks of the Volga city belonged from 1924 to 1941 to the Volga German Republic and was its second largest city.

The neighboring village of Marx was named Angel.

History

The city Marx was in 1767 as a Volga German colony by a Dutch Baron ( Baron Ferdinand de Beauregard Caneau ) founded and initially was called the " Baronsk " ( Баронск ). The German -language name was in honor of the Russian Empress Catherine II or Catherine Jekaterinenstadt city.
