Markus Babbel ( born September 8, 1972 in Munich ) is a former German football player and current football coach, but is currently without a club. With the national team in 1996 he became European Champion.

Playing career

Association

Markus Babbel started his football career with TSV Gilching - Argelsried. After that he played successfully in the youth teams of FC Bayern Munich and worked abroad for the youth selection of the DFB. In the Bundesliga, he came as a defender for Bayern initially only on a few missions, but was on loan 1992-1994 regular player at Hamburger SV. On his return to Munich he sat down by even with Bayern, winning the German championship four times, twice the DFB Cup once and the UEFA Cup.

2000 left Babbel, the Bundesliga and moved to England for the first division team FC Liverpool, with whom he also won the 2001 UEFA Cup. His career was temporarily interrupted by a nerve disease, Guillain -Barré syndrome. After his recovery, he was on loan from Liverpool in 2003 to Blackburn Rovers.

In summer 2004, Babbel moved back to the Bundesliga for VfB Stuttgart in order to follow Marcelo Bordon as a central defender. In the season 2005/ 06 Babbel found in the system of coach Giovanni Trapattoni initially hardly taken into consideration, but later he was again a regular player. Under Trapattoni's successor Armin Veh he came only rarely. At the end of his active career, he won with VfB in the summer of 2007, once again the German Cup. National

VfB Stuttgart

Markus Babbel was after the end of his career as a player assistant coach at VfB Stuttgart. From 1 July 2007 to 22 November 2008, he was assistant coach Armin Veh. After his release 23 November 2008 Babbel was promoted to team manager of VfB Stuttgart. After just two wins from their first 15 games of the season of 2009/10 season and only one win in five games of the Champions League Babbel was sacked on 6 December 2009 in Stuttgart.
