Märsta

Märsta is a town in the Swedish province of Stockholm County and the historic province of Uppland.

The main town of the municipality of Sigtuna is located about 36 km north of Stockholm on the railway line between Stockholm - Uppsala. Here also end the suburban trains ( swedish Pendeltåg ) from Stockholm, and are connected to the north bound Uppsalapendeln.

A large part of the workforce in Märsta commutes to six kilometers north airport Arlanda and Stockholm. In addition to the local government there are still some smaller industrial enterprises in Märsta.

History

Märsta was only a small place, whose guest house was an important station of the mailman on the route Stockholm- Uppsala. A first boom came in 1866 with the establishment of a station on the new railway line. During the Swedish million program in the 1960s should be based on the four surrounding hills estates arise. Ultimately, however, was only built on two hills, as the other two were too close to the flight path of the airport Arlanda. This meant that the schedule established village center is now more on the edge of the settlement.

  • Märsta is the home of the American Football Association Arlanda Jets and the handball club Skånela IF.

Others

In Märsta, especially in Valsta district, 500 families live in the Aramaic origin. They originate mainly from the village Kellef ( Turkish Dereici ) in southeastern Turkey. In this region, the Tur Abdin, survived until the 1960s, approximately 20,000 Arameans. The Kellefeniye ( as they call themselves of the former occupants Kellefs ) have become an integral part of the social life of the city. So they founded the football club Syrianska Föreningen, which was merged in 1993 with Valsta IK to Valsta Syrianska IK. In April 2011, the dedication of their church Mor Yuhanun (St. John) in Valsta district took place. They are members of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch.
