Martín Codax

Martim Codax ( Martín Codax also ) was a Galician troubadour of the 13th century. About his life practically nothing is handed down. He probably lived in the Galician seaside town of Vigo.

The name of Martim Codax is basically synonymous count with the seven traditional Cantigas de amigo, which are dated to the period around 1230 and the earliest known songs in Galician - Portuguese language. Theme of his Cantigas are eagerly waiting for the return of her lover women. The eternally circling, unfulfilled longing is expressed in these songs by both textual and melodic repetitions. Apart from the Cantigas de Santa Maria the songs of Martim Codax Cantigas are the only ones for which - is also delivered to the music - up to the sixth.

The music of Martim Codax was accidentally rediscovered until 1913, when it was found a page of a manuscript in the cover of a book.
