Marty Howe

Marty Gordon Howe ( born February 18, 1954 in Detroit, Michigan ) is a retired American professional ice hockey player (defender), who from 1973 to 1985 for the Hartford Whalers and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers played in the World Hockey Association.

Career

Has always been a strong focus on the sons of "Mr Hockey" Gordie Howe. From 1971, played Marty, the eldest son, a junior at the Toronto Marlboros in the OHA. A year later, his younger brother joined insists Mark. Together they won the Memorial Cup in 1973.

For the 1973/74 season vermeldeten the Houston Aeros in the World Hockey Association with Gordie Howe a spectacular new addition and as an encore his two sons Mark and Marty were committed. Together they were able to win in 1974 and 1975 as a master of WHA AVCO World Trophy equal in their first two seasons. In the NHL Amateur Draft 1974, Montréal Canadiens secured in the third round as the 51st the rights to him. But Marty stayed with his family in the WHA. This did not change anything, as the Detroit Red Wings, the old team of his father in 1977 the rights won him from Montreal. Also in 1977 he was elected in the WHA All-Star team. For the season 1977/78 he moved with his father and brother to the New England Whalers. The team was renamed inclusion in the NHL for the season 1979/80 in Hartford Whalers and so the three Howes also came to joint operations in the NHL, with Marty, in his family, things looked always as relaxed as possible of all, this season the majority in the AHL spent at the Springfield Indians and was allowed to play only six games in the NHL. After this season, his father finally ended his playing career. While his brother Mark was promoted to the NHL as one of the top defenders, Marty was mostly used for the Whalers Binghamton in the AHL. For the 1982/83 season he moved to the Boston Bruins. A year later, he played again in Hartford. After the 1984/85 season, he finished his NHL career.

In 1992 he took over the Flint Bulldogs in the Colonial Hockey League as a coach and went for three games themselves once again on the ice. The following year he moved with the team to Utica. From 2000 to 2006 he worked as an assistant coach for the Chicago Wolves.
