Maryam Yusuf Jamal

Maryam Yusuf Jamal (Arabic Maryam Yusuf Jamal مريم يوسف جمال, DMG Maryam Yūsuf Ǧamāl; birth name Zenebech Tola; born September 16, 1984 in the province of Arsi ) is a Bahraini middle and long distance runner of Ethiopian origin.

Life

For the same village as Haile Gebrselassie to arise and belonging to the Oromo people, put them on their way to school every day 16 km back. Among the five children in her family, she was interested in athletics and the only dabbled in various disciplines before they opted for the sport of running. After she became third in the 2001 National Junior Championships in the 1500 meter race, she invited a manager in Switzerland. She decided not to return to Ethiopia, in May 2002 and requested political asylum. In 2003, she married her compatriot and coach Mnashu Taye, who lived there since 1995.

In 2004, she was undercutting the norm in the 1500 meter race for the Olympic Games in Athens but was not nominated by the Ethiopian Athletics Federation. After a failed attempt to acquire Swiss citizenship, took her and her husband to offer a future to start for Bahrain, which enabled her to start outside of Switzerland.

On adoption of the Bahraini citizenship, the couple renamed: Zenebech Tola in Maryam Yusuf Jamal and her husband Tariq Yaqub Hasane. At the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 2005, she was fifth over 1500 meters, after it was initially hampered the target curve by a Russian competitor. Two weeks earlier, she had set up in Oslo with 8:28,87 min her personal best in the 3000 -meter run.

On 27 August 2006 she ran in Rieti with 3:56,18 min her personal best over 1500 m. The 2007 World Championships in Osaka finally brought her greatest success to date - in 3:58,75 min, they latched on to the world title over 1,500 m. This title she defended at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. In London, she won the bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics in the 1500 m final.

Maryam Yusuf Jamal lives in Lausanne. It is not only successful on the track, but also in road races in her adopted home of Switzerland. In 2002 she established the current course record at Hallwilerseelauf on the half marathon distance, 2003 and 2004, she won the Basel City Run well as the Murten run, the 2004 Swiss Women's Race and 2004 and 2005 Lucerne City Run.
