History

The first bridge over the Masnedsund was opened in 1884. It was a 182 meter long pure railway bridge, which was designed as a swing bridge. From Masnedø consisted of a railway ferry to Orehoved on Falster. In 1931 it was decided to replace the bridge during the fixed Storstrømsquerung by a new combined road and railway bridge. On 13 May 1933, the contract between Danske Statsbaner (DSB ) and the English firm Dorman Long was signed. As a subcontractor for the foundations and the concrete work on the superstructure, the Danish Christiani & Nielsen was committed. In the same year, work began. On December 12, 1935 rammed a British steamship the old bridge and the northern part of the grid structure crashed into the Sound. Within ten days of the railway portion of the new bridge was completed and taken the train service again. On 6 August 1937, the bridge was officially opened to traffic. The old bridge was demolished.

View

As part of the Fehmarn Belt fixed link the railway line is to be extended two lanes. As an extension of the bridge is not possible, the establishment of a new, third bridge over the Masnedsund is planned.
