After the death of Bishop Hamilton the large diocese of Olomouc was divided in 1777, applied simultaneously to the Archbishopric and established as its suffragan diocese of the Brno. As its first bishop nominated Archduchess Maria Theresa in her capacity as Queen of Bohemia on May 18, 1777 Mathias Franz Chorinsky of Ledske, she had already collected in 1761 along with his brothers the title of count.

The new diocese consisted of 18 deaneries, which were under 151 parishes and 28 affiliated churches. During the tenure Chorinskys the number of deaneries was doubled, increasing to 254 parishes and affiliated churches to 143.

Although the latter were able to impose their ideas and thereby the reform Catholicism could spread more in Moravia than in the other Austrian territories, 1782, the University was moved back again to Olomouc. In the Diocese of Brno eight monasteries numerous churches were the reforms abolished, profaned and other Josephinian measures carried out.
