Mathias Steuchius

Mattias Steuchius ( born October 26, 1644 the Församling Fogdö, community Strängnäs; † August 2, 1730 in Uppsala ) was from 1685 to 1694 superintendent in Härnösand, 1694-1714 Bishop of Lund and subsequent to his death Archbishop of Uppsala.

Life

The son of Superintendent Peter Erici Steuchius grew up in Härnösand. He studied at Uppsala University theology and philosophy. After obtaining the Master's degree, he hired himself first as a teacher. From 1669 to 1671 he undertook a study trip to England, Germany and Holland. After returning Steuchius was ordained in 1672. Subsequently, he was appointed professor of logic and metaphysics at his home university.

1683 he was assigned to his ailing father as an assistant and took over after his death in the superintendency in Härnösand. Here he sat down by a visitation for the enforcement of written in the spirit of Lutheran orthodoxy church law in 1686.
